I have a question for well-versed Christians regarding the lineage of Jesus?

In Matthew 1:1 the genealogy of Jesus is listed, ending with his human father, Joseph. My question is,, How is Jesus' lineage actually linked to Joseph's , and ultimately to Abraham,, when Joseph wasn't actually Jesus' birth father? Was it based strictly on the covenant promise?
